Medical and Orthopaedic Training

Tony Andrade qualified at the London Hospital Medical College in 1990, and was a house officer at the Royal London Hospital in Whitechapel, and Broomfield Hospital in Chelmsford.

His basic and higher surgical training were in the Wessex region of the South of England, working in hospitals in Portsmouth, Isle of Wight, Southampton, Winchester, Basingstoke, Salisbury, Poole and Bournemouth.


Tony Andrade     
He was fellowship trained in hip and knee surgery at Sportsmed-SA in Adelaide, South Australia, and in trauma surgery at the Hennepin County Medical Center, Minneapolis, USA.

Tony Andrade was Locum Consultant at The Royal Bournemouth Hospital and Poole Hospital NHS Trusts from March 2002 until he took up his substantive post at the Royal Berkshire Hospital NHS Trust in Reading in July 2002.

He completed an MSc in Orthopaedic and Rehabilitation technology from the University of Dundee in 2004, with a dissertation on "The tensile properties of the Medial Patellofemoral Ligament".

Mr. Harry Brownlow
BSc, MB ChB, MD, FRCS (Tr&Orth)

Consultant Orthopaedic Shoulder and Elbow Surgeon

Harry Brownlow graduated with a first from Manchester University in 1990. His higher surgical training was on the Oxford academic programme based at the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre and the John Radcliffe Hospitals. He was awarded one of the two annual National prizes for his exit exams in trauma and orthopaedics. He has a basic research degree in Anatomy, a higher research degree in fracture healing, and has published widely in a number of specialist areas.


    
Harry was fellowship trained in shoulder and elbow surgery in Oxford, Reading and Sydney before being appointed a consultant orthopaedic surgeon at the Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust in 2003.
He treats all shoulder and elbow conditions including fractures and dislocations in adults and children. The majority of his work is arthroscopic (keyhole) using the most up to date techniques for treating rotator cuff tears, dislocating shoulders and tennis elbow. Harry takes great care in recording surgical details and surgical outcome and therefore knows that he has a very high success rate with few major complications (Results and Outcomes).

He cares for all his clients with sympathy, understanding and a commitment to tailor a treatment plan according to individual needs.

Mr R.D.A. Dodds
OBE, FRCS(Orth.)

Consultant Knee Surgeon

Born in York but became a "southerner" at the age of 5. Educated at Kingston Grammar School, St.Catharine's College, Cambridge and St.Thomas's Hospital, London. After basic surgical training, became a Registrar at Reading and Oxford, and then Senior Registrar at St.Mary's Hospital, London. Fellowship in Knee Surgery in Brisbane, Australia with Dr.P.Myers, and paediatric training with Dr.T.Maguire in Brisbane and Mr.A.Catteral and Mr.J.Fixen in London.


Richard Dobbs    
Represented England and Great Britain at hockey between 1979 and 1988, winning 147 caps and attending 2 Olympic Games, 2 World Cups and 1 European Championship, winning European and World silver medals and Olympic bronze and gold medals. Spent some years in management of elite sport but now limited to competing in veterans hockey, playing golf, real tennis and road cycling.

Modest list of publications on subjects as diverse as glove perforation in surgery, small bowel function after aortic surgery, analgaesia after ACL surgery, patellar stabilisation, paediatric trigger thumbs, adductor pyomyositis in children, multiple hereditary osteochondromatosis and the use of skull x-rays in A&E.

Essence of Practice
Practices in all areas of elective knee surgery such as primary and revision knee replacement, cruciate ligament reconstruction and arthroscopic knee surgery as well as a practice in general paediatric orthopaedic problems.

Mr Shawn Peter Tavares
MBBS FRCS(Tr & Ortho)

Consultant Hip and Knee Surgeon

Mr Shawn Tavares qualified as a medical doctor from the University of the West Indies in 1987.His orthopaedic surgical training was done on the Oxford training programme with rotations in Oxford, Stoke Mandeville and Reading.

This was complemented with a clinical fellowship in knee sports injury surgery at Chelsea and Westminster in 1998/ 99.


Shawn Peter Tavares    
During this time he was also involved in several biomechanical research projects at Imperial College under the guidance of Professor Andrew Amis.

He returned to the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre in Oxford in 2000 to complete his training in hip and knee arthritis surgery prior to taking up his current post as a consultant orthopaedic surgeon at the Royal Berkshire Hospital in Reading.

Mr Tavares has pioneered Birmingham hip resurfacing, large metal on metal bearings and computer-navigated surgery in Reading. He has developed a service for day case Anterior Cruciate Ligament reconstruction (ACL) repairs. He is currently involved in an international study on 4th generation hip resurfacing (Further Info). Shawn has been Clinical Director for trauma and orthopaedics at the the Royal Berks Hospital from 2004 to present.

Mr Chinnakonda Arvind
FRCS (Tr. & Orth.)

Consultant Foot & Ankle and Knee Surgeon

Chinnakonda Arvind qualified in 1986 from the Madurai Medical College, Madurai, India. He had orthopaedic training in India and was awarded D. (Ortho.) and M.S. (Ortho.) in 1987 and 1992 respectively.

He came to the United Kingdom in 1994 for further orthopaedic training. He had specialist training in orthopaedics in the Wessex region. He was awarded FRCS (G) in 1996 and FRCS (Tr. & Orth.) in 2000.


Chinnakonda Arvind    
He worked as locum consultant at Royal Berkshire Foundation NHS Trust before being appointed to a substantive post in 2004.

Chinnakonda Arvind has expertise in management of problems affecting the lower limbs and performs joint replacement of hip, knee, ankle and toes. In addition he performs arthroscopic surgery, ligament and tendon reconstructions of knee and ankle and realignment osteotomy for knee pain.

He has special interest in the treatment of various foot conditions like bunions, by corrective surgery including Scarf osteotomy.

Mr Patrick McKenna
MBBS FRCS (Eng) FRCS (Trauma and Orthopaedics)

Consultant Spinal Surgeon

Patrick McKenna qualified at Guy's Hospital in 1993 and undertook his Basic Surgical Training in London. He spent a further year training in Plastic Surgery before being selected to join the Wessex Orthopaedic Specialist Registrar Rotation. He developed an interest in Spinal Surgery early on in his Basic Surgical Training and continued this interest through every stage of his Higher Surgical Training gaining exposure to all aspects of Spinal Surgery.


Patrick McKenna    
In 2004-5 he undertook the Nottingham Spinal Fellowship, further establishing and developing the skills required to perform complex spinal surgery. He was awarded the Spine Society of Europe Clinical Award in 2005 for research undertaken into lumbar spinal fusion.

He joined the Royal Berkshire Hospital as a Consultant Spinal Surgeon in 2005 and is an Honorary Consultant at Southampton General Hospital where undertakes spinal deformity surgery.

Patrick McKenna has a special interest in the management of:
  • low back pain
  • sciatica
  • spinal stenosis
  • degenerative conditions of the cervical spine
  • total disc replacement in both the cervical and lumbar spine using minimal access techniques.
He is also trained in injection techniques for the non-surgical resolution of spinal and nerve pain, which can assist in pain control and rehabilitation.

Mr Zulfiquar O Rahimtoola
MD PhD

Consultant Hand and Wrist Surgeon

Zulfi Rahimtoola specialises in all aspects of hand and wrist surgery. He is extensively fellowship-trained in hand surgery, has a PhD in rheumatoid wrist surgery and performs total wrist replacement surgery. Zulfi is multi-lingual and also offers fluent consultation in Dutch, French, Spanish and Urdu.

Academic Background:


    
Zulfi Rahimtoola started his medical training at the University of Bristol and through the Erasmus European exchange program he subsequently qualified from the University of Leiden in 1996. The following year he was a Research Fellow at Stanford University, Stanford, California.

His higher surgical training was in the Netherlands. During this he developed a keen interest in hand and wrist surgery and combined his clinical work with academic research on the treatment of arthritic disorders of the wrist.

Zulfi Rahimtoola has published extensively (Publications List), and has been invited to present and lecture at different centres throughout Europe. His research resulted in a PhD thesis (PhD thesis) on surgery of the wrist in rheumatoid arthritis which was awarded in 2005. Part of this work received the annual Dutch registrar prize.

After qualifying as an Orthopaedic Surgeon in 2004 he was fellowship trained in 4 different international centres of excellence in hand surgery in Barcelona, Paris, Derby and Wrightington.

Through his academic research and extensive postgraduate fellowship training he has become an Orthopaedic Hand Surgeon with a comprehensive understanding of the diagnosis and treatment of acute and chronic conditions affecting the hand and wrist. He continues to perform research in the field and maintains strong academic links within Europe.

Mr Charles A Pailthorpe

Consultant Orthopaedic Hand and Wrist Surgeon

Academic background:

Charles Pailthorpe is a Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon working in the NHS at the Royal Berkshire Hospital, Reading and consulting privately at Capio Hospital, Reading.


Charles Pailthorpe    
He qualified from Birmingham Medical School, having joined the Royal Army Medical Corps whilst a student. After completing his houseman year at hospitals in Stratford and Coventry he was posted to Hong Kong as the Regimental Medical Officer at Stanley Fort. Whilst there he served with the First Battalion, the Royal Green Jackets, and the Queen’s Own Highlanders before moving to the British Military Hospital in Kowloon to start his career in surgery. He had a variety of postings in military hospitals in England and had tours to Northern Ireland, West Germany, Belize, the Falklands and Nepal. He served in the first Gulf War.

His training in trauma and orthopaedic surgery involved experience in military hospitals and also two years in Oxford at the Nuffield Orthopaedic Hospital and the John Radcliffe Hospital. He started his consultant career at the Cambridge Military Hospital in Aldershot in 1992 but left the Services in 1995 to take up his current post at the Royal Berkshire Hospital NHS Trust. His military career inevitably involved a large experience in traumatic injuries, but his elective interest in orthopaedic conditions has always been in the upper limb, to the extent that now he is exclusively a hand surgeon. He has obtained a postgraduate certificate in Medical Informatics from the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in March 2006.

Mr. A. Macleod

Medical and Orthopaedic Training

Born in Cheshire, Alan Macleod graduated from Liverpool University in 1993. His surgical training was predominately in the North West of England with his higher surgical training based in the Manchester Deanery.

He completed an MSc in Orthopaedic Engineering from Cardiff School of Engineering and University of Wales College of Medicine with a dissertation on "Assessment of a Simple Clinical Based Test to Quantify the Trendelenburg Test". He has presented his research at numerous national and international meetings and has a modest list of publications.

Alan undertook 18 months fellowship training in Trauma and Reconstructive surgery with advanced training in the management of complex fractures, and deformity correction with the use of circular external fixators.
This training included fellowships with internationally recognised specialists at the Centre for Limb Lengthening and Reconstruction in Melbourne Australia and The Bristol Limb Reconstruction Unit in Bristol, before he took up his substantive post at the Royal Berkshire Hospital NHS Trust in Reading.

Mr. Andrew R. Mc Andrew

Specialist Interests

Mr. Mc Andrew is a general trauma surgeon treating injuries to both the upper and lower limbs. His sub-specialty interest is in the management of complex fractures and their complications, such as non-union, deformity correction and osteomyelitis. He undertakes some elective knee arthroscopy and forefoot surgery.


    
Background:

Mr. Mc Andrew was brought up in a small North Yorkshire village before he ventured south and qualified from St. George's Hospital Medical School, Tooting.
He underwent Basic Surgical Training and a year as a registrar in Yorkshire, before undertaking two years full time research in Sheffield investigating the radiographic appearances of lengthened bone in paediatric tibiae and loosening at the bone screw interface. This was submitted as a thesis titled the Radiographic Classification of Callotasis and an MD was awarded in 2004.

He underwent Higher Surgical Training in Trauma & Orthopaedics in the Wessex Region. He also spent one year as the Ilizarov Fellow in Chertsey, Surrey undergoing sub-specialist training in trauma and limb reconstruction.

He became a Locum Consultant in the Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust in 2006 where he had a specialist interest in trauma and lower limb surgery.
He transferred to the Royal Berkshire Hospital NHS Foundation Trust in July 2007 as a Locum Consultant Trauma Surgeon and took up his substantive post in November 2007. He has introduced the Ilizarov external fixator system to the Royal Berkshire Hospital and set up a limb reconstruction service undertaking complex trauma, deformity correction and surgery for osteomyelitis.

He is the lead trauma surgeon and is the TARN (Trauma Audit Research Network) clinical director at the Royal Berkshire Hospital. He is a member of the group charged with implementing the recommendations of the NCEPOD document relating to trauma care and the fractured neck of femur working group.
